A wide range of scholarships is available at national level. Of these scholarships, a large number are offered by the 13 talent-fostering organisations, which are supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (see below). In contrast, to structure doctoral programmes (e.g. Research Training Groups), the personality of the Ph.D. candidate also plays an important role in the selection procedure of these organisations.

Organizations for the Promotion of Young Talent

The organizations for the promotion of young talent gear their funding to the funding guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (all documents in German). Currently, Ph.D. candidates are funded with 1,350 euros per month. In addition, a research allowance of 100 euros is usually granted. It is also possible to receive a family allowance of 155 euros. According to a decision by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in summer 2023, the funding amount will be increased by 100 euros in October 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The funding period is generally a maximum of three years. From October 2023, this funding commitment will be granted for the entire duration of the project. There is an option for a six-month extension. Parents and people affected by a chronic illness or disability can receive funding for up to 12 months longer. In exceptional cases - especially for parents - this funding can be extended to four years. This information does not apply to the offers for structured doctoral funding or to individual special programs.

All programs are aimed at all Ph.D. candidates admitted in Germany, especially refugees and asylum seekers. Here you will find a short overview (PDF, GER).
